VIHC Seeks Cultural Groups To Participate In Celebrating Diversity Initiative

Date: October 27, 2009 | Press Release: #09-002

The Virgin Islands Humanities Council is seeking cultural groups from all the countries represented in the territory to participate in its "Building Community, Celebrating Diversity" initiative. Groups are invited to take part in a series of cultural diversity activities, including a cultural showcase, culinary samplings, exhibits or vending, a call for papers, panel discussions, and a community grants program. Deadline to register is Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.

"Building Community, Celebrating Diversity" is an initiative in May 2010 to provide a forum for dialogue amongst our diverse population on how disciplines within the humanities can help to unify and rebuild our society; foster extended inter-group engagement; and facilitate cultural exchanges and common understanding among the people of our islands.

As a "We the People" initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, this project will inspire deeper appreciation for Virgin Islanders' unique heritage as Americans. Other sponsors include the VI Department of Tourism, the West Indian Company Ltd., and the VI Lottery.

The Virgin Islands Humanities Council is a private non-profit organization affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency. Its mission is to provide opportunities for the diverse population of the Virgin Islands to participate in humanities programs that promote a love of learning, encourage dialogue, enhance understanding, and broaden people's judgment. Knowledge of the humanities enables Virgin Islanders to interpret their past and shape their future. For more information or to register, call 776-4044 or email to [email protected].
