V.I. Humanities Council Seeks Board Members

Date: October 27, 2009 | Press Release: #09-003

The Virgin Islands Humanities Council seeks four active and committed board members from the St. Thomas-St. John district and one from St. Croix to join our team. The humanities play an increasingly important role in all our lives, helping us to tell our stories and to set the agenda for a coherent future.

In particular, in 2009 the Virgin Islands Humanities Council needs individuals with political insight and connections, who are:

  • willing and able to advocate effectively on behalf of the VIHC Board;
  • well-known individuals with distinguished academic credentials who have had significant involvement with the humanities, as members of state councils or through other associations;
  • and individuals with expertise in developing financial resources for non-profits.

Preferred nominees will:

  • serve as advocates for the Council before the legislature, government agencies, and the general public;
  • be able to understand and articulate the mission, plans and needs of the Council; be willing to devote significant time, energy and enthusiasm to supporting the Council;
  • help set direction and oversee the implementation of the Council's strategic plan; establish and oversee its policies;
  • and make a commitment to the Council as a board member.

These criteria are offered as guidelines and indicators of the types of skills and experience needed on the board. We continue to seek a board with gender ethnic, racial and geographic diversity. The humanities includes disciplines such as history, philosophy, languages, literature, cultural anthropology, folklife studies, comparative religion, ethics, archaeology, jurisprudence, and the history and criticism of the arts.

Nominees should submit a letter of interest and resume to the V.I. Humanities Council office at 1829 Kongens Gade, St. Thomas, VI 00802, or by email to [email protected] or fax at 340-774-3972.
