"We The People" Project 2007 - Director's Message
"The Future of the Past: The Business of Cultural Heritage Tourism"
The We the People Cultural Heritage Conference, "The Future of the Past: The Business of Cultural Heritage Tourism" initiative was an example of the true spirit of partnership that galvanized a great idea and the enthusiasm needed to make the conference a reality.
The conference examined and explored the economic benefits of culture to further realize the territory's need to enhance, develop and manage a successful cultural heritage tourism product. This brand of tourism will sustain social cohesiveness by ensuring that future generations continue to teach, learn, and understand the culture and heritage of the Virgin Islands. It will emphasize our traditions and history as significant sources of income and introduce a number of visitors to our valuable cultural and natural resources. Most importantly, it will assist the diverse population of our community in becoming an integral part of the tourism industry.
The Council's Mission is to provide opportunities that will promote life-long learning and increase cultural awareness through the humanities. The conference enabled us, as a people, to reflect upon our rich cultural heritage, ask fundamental questions of value and purpose, and systematically plan for the future.
